I am a fifth grade teacher at Westminster Ave. Elementary School and was one of the classrooms that participated in the “Drumming For Life” program during the school year of 2004-2005. I found the program to have many positives for both me and the children in my class. Through the drumming program, I was able to connect with the students at a deeper level than in previous years, which helped me with my instruction, and helped the children with comprehension. It was apparent to me that many of my students benefited tremendously, both academically as well as emotionally through the use of the drumming, and it was obvious when reviewing test results. I know most of the children will continue to practice this skill on their own. As for me, I will use many aspects of this program with my future classes.
