The Life Skills Drumming Program uses rhythm to help at-risk youths cope with emotions and improve self-esteem. Teens learn to maintain control over anger and impulsive behavior, in order to connect and communicate with others, while creating a vision of a more positive life.

Program Goals

  • Youths learn impulse control and anger management
  • Youths address issues of fear and abandonment
  • Youths discover joy and purpose
  • Youths become less guarded and communicate openly with facility counselors
  • Youths discover and connect with newly uncovered emotions

Program Specifics

  • Biweekly sessions for 6 weeks
  • Program debriefing and reflection session
  • Drums are provided for each workshop participant
  • Cost: $150 per session

Life Skills Drumming Training

Practitioners

The Life Skills Training Program is designed for practitioners (people who are trained to work with at risk youth). The training includes experiencing different character value exercises such as Honesty, Independence and Trust, then learning the techniques necessary to implement them. No formal musical training is needed.

Training Specifics

  • Two days
  • Designed to take place over a weekend starting on Saturday and continuing through Sunday. (The training can also take place during the week)
    Each person will receive an instructional DVD and a Certificate of Completion.

First Session – 5 hours
Objectives

  • Learning how drumming works with psychology to effect change in behavior
  • Learning about the relationship between the conscious and unconscious mind
  • Experiencing the eight Life Skill character values
  • Discussion of the affects of each character value
  • Learning to understand emotional energy produced through the drumming
  • Tracking your own emotional changes through your drumming changes

Second Session – 5 hours
Objectives

  • Each Facilitator leads the group by taking them through a character value
  • Learning to work your voice, with the drum
  • Learning how to interpret drumming responses and to hold the energy of the response
  • Learning to work with and interpret emotional responses produced through the drumming
  • Learning to hold the focus of the group while working with individuals
  • Learning how to get participants to talk about what they experience and to help them effect change within
  • Question and answer

Cost

Proposal
  • Two Day Workshop
  • 1st Session - 5 Hour Training
  • 2nd Session – 5 Hour Training
  • Minimum - 10 participants
  • Receive Life Skills Drumming Certification
  • WEEKEND COST: $1,500.00 + Expenses

Licensing Fees

  • Phase I
    Drum costs: $40.00 per drum
    Two year usage of program: $50 per year fee per facilitator.
  • Phase II
    If after two years, the organization desires to continue as a licensee of the LIFE SKILLS DRUMMING PROGRAM, the following options are available. Please note that the licensing fee per facilitator decreases over time. We recommend advanced training to enhance and refine the skills every two years.
  • Phase IIA
    Advanced training for all facilitators: $1,500.00.
    Two more years of program usage: $37.50 per year per facilitator.
  • Phase IIB
    Advanced training for all facilitators: $1,500.00
    Two more years of program: $25.00 per year per facilitator.
