Drumming up student achievement
Westminster fifth-graders use rhythm to improve concentration.

united teacher Evelyn Soo's fifth-grade students from Westminster Avenue in Venice energetically drummed for family and guests at a special presentation June 11. The event was designed to share how rhythm was used throughout the year to help the learning environment of the class. Soo, an National Board Certified teacher was inspired to bring rhythm and drumming into her classroom by the Drumming for Your Life Institute.

"Drumming builds a deep sense of community, releases stress, and assists with classroom management," says Soo, who attributes much of her students' increased academic success to the drumming. "Drumming rhythms increase my students' focus and concentration, and more class time is spent on teaching and learning."
