About Drumming for Your Life Institute

The Drumming For Your Life Institute (DFYL) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization founded in 2002 by Steven Angel who now serves as President.  DFYL is dedicated to using the power of rhythm to help children and youth develop the emotional, academic, and social skills they need to succeed in school and in life.   DFYL offers five core programs.  The Reading and Rhythm seamlessly integrates rhythm with educational tools, psychology into the reading experience.  The Life Skills Drumming Program helps students control impulsive behavior and improves problem solving skills.   Steven Angel’s work at Camp Karl Holton caught the attention of CNN who filmed a feature story.  Additional media followed with NBC News and an article in the Los Angeles Times.  In July 2011, the Reading and Rhythm Program was featured on the Teaching Channel’s "Amazing Classrooms".

For Steven Angel’s work in education and therapy, he is listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in America and the Marquis Who’s Who in the World.

DFYL has worked with over 1,200 teachers and 5,000 students in Central and Southern California.  This includes Barry Nidorf, Los Padrinos, and Central Juvenile Halls, Detention camps that include: Mendenhall, Jarvis, McNair, Resnick, Munz, Holton, Scudder, and Smith, K-12 schools, family centers, and recreational parks.   DFYL works with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, Los Angeles Unified School District, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, GRYD (Gang Reduction Youth Development) and many others.  In addition, DFYL has held successful sessions in cancer and drug rehabilitation facilities as well as national conventions for psychology and therapy.
